The manifestation of good will on the part of Jew and Gentile alike toward Hebrew University in Jerusalem is heartening in these days of anti-Semitism, declared Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chancellor of the university, on his departure for Palestine on board the Rex Saturday.
“The Hebrew University is endeavoring to become a genuine center of science and learning,” said Dr. Magnes. “In saying goodbye to my friends in America I ask their continued interest and help. I go away with the conviction that the American public is back of the idea of the first and only university of the Jewish people and that it can continue to look for support to all those forces in America that cherish learning and that are interested in the development of the Jewish spirit.”
Dr. Magnes, who has been in this country since April 30, was the guest of Felix M. Warburg, member of the board of governors and chairman of the council of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, during his stay in New York. Dr. Max Schloessinger, associate chancellor, and S. Ginzberg, registrar, who accompanied Dr. Magnes to this country, will also return to Palestine shortly.
