Mahmoud Abbas called for a July 26 referendum on coexistence with Israel. The Palestinian Authority president made the announcement over the weekend, resisting pressure by the rival Hamas government. The referendum will be based on a document drafted by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails that calls for a Palestinian state in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and eastern Jerusalem.
