Many Jewish lawmakers joined a small minority in opposing a House resolution asking President Bush to designate a day of “fasting and prayer” for soldiers fighting in Iraq. The bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on March 27 by a 346-49 vote, called on the president to ask the people of the United States to “seek guidance from God to achieve a greater understanding of our own failings and to learn how we can do better in our everyday activities,” and “to gain resolve in meeting the challenges that confront our nation.”
