Conditions as regards the Jews in Lithuania are going steadily from bad to worse. Israel Matz, who returned from Europe on the Leviathan, said today.
Despite the fact that the Jews played a prominent part in the establishment of the Lithuanian Republic and had received various glittering promises of equality at the time for their work in that direction, they are being harassed in every way, Mr. Matz said.
“There is an agrarian law, for instance, under which Jews who till the soil are being driven to the cities and when they get to the cities, the outcry against them is why they persist in crowding in the cities.
“Almost all of the tax burdens are shifted onto the backs of Jewish business men, the non-Jewish escaping with but little taxation.
“As a result of the multifold oppressions, Jews in large numbers, Mr. Matz said, are leaving for Palestine.”
