Lord Melchett is praised for his forthright stand with his co-religionists as revealed recently in the London Daily Herald, by “Opinion” which devotes an editorial in its current issue to Lord Melchett.
“In the midst of many dispiriting circumstances and disquieting events, it is good to come upon the word of a man. This man is Lord Melchett” says “Opinion”.
“Lord Melchett’s father, who will always be remembered as Sir Alfred Mond, was alone in his generation in the matter of downright, unafraid speech, whether in dealing with the Colonial Office’s responsibility for the August 1929 Jewish massacres in Palestine or with Dr. Weizmann’s measured and halting arraignment of that responsibility,” the editorial continues. “There was a breezy invigorating quality in the elder Melchett’s public utterance which was more arresting because Alfred Mond seemed to have taken himself away from the Jewish community and because the conservative Jews of England in some degree and the “intolerant liberals” in far greater degree were utterly inhospitable to this true Jewish penitent. Had Mond lived a little longer he might have ended the reign of platitudes in Anglo-Jewry.
“Forthrightness of speech must be in the Mond-Melchett strain. Not in decades has the world read such an indictment of its cruel, unjust and un-Christian attitude toward the Jew from the lips of one of high station as was penned for the Daily Herald by Lord Melchett”, the editorial concludes.
