Meyer L. Prentis, whose financial acumen helped guide General Motors through its crucial formative years, died at his home here today after a long illness. Today was his 84th birthday. Mr. Prentis joined General Motors in 1911 as chief accountant and auditor. Five years later he was appointed comptroller and in 1919 he was elected treasurer. He held that post for 32 years, until his retirement in 1951. Both during and after his close association with GM, Mr. Prentis was active in civic organizations and philanthropic endeavors, especially in Detroit. As a former Trustee of Temple Beth El, he led the drive to pay off the mortgage on the present Temple. He was a former head of the Jewish Welfare Federation, was elected to the society of Honor, Reform Jewish Appeal 1970, and was a founder of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Funeral services will be held at Temple Beth El here tomorrow.
