Legislation preventing foreign-born citizens from holding public office was unanimously requested by the national convention of the Military Order of the World War meeting here today. The resolution was introduced by Rear Admiral Reginald R. Belknap, U.S.N. Retired. Despite the unanimous vote the resolution was bitterly debated before passage and several delegates admitted afterward that they failed to vote against it because they feared to have their names recorded against the motion.
The resolution charged that many immigrants had sought citizenship to protect them in spreading subversive doctrines and that native-born citizens had a better understanding of the principles of government set forth in the Constitution. The Order is composed of commissioned officers who served in the World War.
