Mr. Nahum Sokolov Tributed on His Seventieth Birthday at Closing Meeting of Actions Committee: All H

He had hardly hoped for such a privilege, to close the session in such an elevated mood, Mr. H. Farbstein, who presided over the session of the Actions Committee of the Zionist World organisation which has been meeting here during the last few days, said in closing the concluding meeting of the session this afternoon. He was referring to a motion put by Dr. Berthold Feiwel to express on behalf of the Actions Committee congratulations to Mr. Nahum Sokolov, the President of the Zionist Executive, on his seventieth birthday, which occurs on the 15th. day of Shebat, corresponding with January 23rd.

Mr. Sokolov was their teacher of Zionism, the Chairman said. And all those whom he taught remained firm in their Zionist faith.

It was a great honour that had been bestowed upon him, Dr. Feiwel said, to make a proposal which would be accorded complete unanimity – to express, on behalf of the General Council, congratulations to Mr. Nahum Sokolov, on his seventieth birthday.

All present rose from their places amid acclamation.

Seeing Mr. Sokolov in the Commissions and Sub-Commissions, taking note of every detail, alert and energetic, Dr. Feiwel went on, showed greatness by attending to small things. It was the greatness of a commander working like a soldier. They wanted to express their debt of gratitude to their master and teacher, who was a source of enrichment and enlightenment.

Dr. Feiwel referred to the all-embracing nature of Mr. Sokolov’s literary work, to his wisdom, his intellectual powers and unequalled grace. It was a happy thought that he was there with them as their leader, their guide, their mentor, their friend and colleague. May he remain long with them, he said, in the service of the cause.

Mr. Sokolov, in acknowledgment, thanked Dr. Feiwel. He had no desire, he said, for the celebration of this event, but it was inescapable. There was no greater honour for him than to be President of the Zionist Executive. All his life was bound up with the Jewish National Home. That was the central point in his life’s work. All other things were but by-products. He had no other wish than to work till the very end for the Jewish National Home and to be of service to the Jewish people.

The Central Executive of the Jewish National Fund in Great Britain at its last meeting just held here, under the chairmanship of Mr. C. J. Ross, adopted a motion moved by Mr. Leopold Schen, the former President, who was welcomed back after his absence owing to ill-health, congratulating Mr. Sokolov on his attainment of his seventieth birthday. It was unanimously decided that a special Nahum Sokolov Tribute Fund be opened for the purpose of inscribing Mr. Sokolov’s name in the Golden Book each year on his birthday.
