Acting on a pledge made last August, Canadian Trade Minister Jack Horner has introduced new legislation on the Arab boycott. The legislation requires all Canadian companies which are asked to comply with the Arab boycott to report such requests to the Trade Ministry. Failure to do so will result in a $250 fine for each day the request goes unreported.
Until now, the government had suggested guidelines to deal with the boycott but no sanctions were applied. Herb Gray, Liberal MP for Windsor West in Ontario, who has been asking for legislation for years, said the new legislation was a good first step but nothing more than that. He pointed out that a firm dealing in millions of dollars could be fined the relatively small amount of $91,000 if it failed to report one year. Ontario Province passed a comprehensive anti-boycott law last month.
