The new Roumanian school law, which aims to reform the educatonal system of the country, will seriously affect the Jewish population, it developed as the bill was taken up in parliament.

It appears that the reforms in the school law are motivated by the “necessity” to wrest commerce and industry from the “aliens” in favor of native Roumanians.

Dr. William Filderman, speaking on the bill in the House protested vigorously against terming the minorities in Roumania “aliens,” particularly the Jews who had developed the Roumanian cities. The needs of the Roumanian towns are complicated as it is, he stated.

Dr. Filderman charged the Government with a deliberate attempt to drive the Jews out of commerce and industry and to deprive them of educational opportunity. Even now the proportion of Jewish students is less than the proportion of the Jewish population would entitle them. Of the 25,313 students there are only 3,298 Jewish students, he stated.
