The New York Daily News, in the third editorial of a campaign for increased immigration, declared today that increasing the population by 13,000,000 would force the creation of new wealth and aid the restoration of prosperity. “This country isn’t built up yet,” the editorial said. “There is plenty more work to be done in it; plenty of improvements to be made.”
Discussing the contention that immigrants take American jobs, the News said eliminating from the country the 10,000,000 unemployed and their families would not have the effect of restoring prosperity, but would decrease the nation’s consumption power to the point where the population “would be smothered economically and financially.” Conversely, it suggested, increasing the population would eliminate commodity surpluses.
