Israel’s best hope for its first medal in Olympic competition was set off course yesterday when its sailing team in the 470 class competition finished in a dismal eighth place.
Shimshon Brokman, 27, and Eitan Friedlander, 26, were expected to place in the top three and bring home to Israel its first medal since the Jewish State began competing in the Olympic Games in 1952.
Meanwhile, two Jewish athletes of the U.S. Olympic team won medals. Yesterday, Robert Berland of Wilmett, III. won a silver medal in the 180-pound class in the judo competition. Last week, Dara Torres of Beverly Hills, Calif. won a gold medal as a member of the four-women 400-meter freestyle relay swimming team.
