The number of Jewish children in Montreal schools has been falling steadily since 1923, according to figures released here. Only 8,134 Jewish pupils were enrolled in 1951 as compared to the 13,954 registered in 1923. The decrease has been due to a shift of the Jewish population from Montreal to neighboring Outremont, where Jewish children now from the majority of the enrollment in the schools for English-speaking pupils.
Jewish children form the majority of all children enrolled in eight Prostestant English-speaking schools: Baron Byng High School; Commercial High School; Fairmount, Bancroft, Devonshire, Iona, Van Horne and Edward VII Schools. In Alexandra School, 77.9 percent of the children enrolled were Jewish in 1924. There were no Jewish children among the 277 children attending that school in 1951.
