Widespread opposition to the proposed nomination of Sir Isaac Isaacs, recently appointed Chief Justice of Australia, as governor-general of the Commonwealth of Australia, has been indicated here. The opposition is not in any way anti-Semitic but is based on the fact that former appointees, coming from England, have been regarded as an important link with Great Britain and a continuation of the policy of appointment of someone not an Australian is thought would ensure the naming of someone more disinterested than a native appointee.

The Australian Labor Party, following its declared policy to have an Australian appointed Governor-General, has recommended Sir Isaac, who climaxed a brilliant legal career of 30 years by his recent appointment as Chief Justice. Despite the outcropping of opposition to a local appointee, all the political parties pay tribute to Sir Isaac.

There is a feeling in some quarters that the recommendation that Sir Isaac be appointed was influenced by the Catholic majority in the Federal government since the British nominee is always a Protestant.
