Palestine Reconstruction is a Splendid Plan, Sir Matthew Nathan Says

Sir Matthew Nathan commented on recent developments in Palestine when interviewed yesterday at the Gotham Hotel by the representatives of the “Jewish Daily Bulletin.” Sir Matthew, who is one of the prominent British administators and former governor of Queensland, Australia, is in New York on his way to England. When Sir Herbert Samuel was about to retire from his office as High Commissioner of Palestine, the name of Sir Matthew Nathan was mentioned as a prospective candidate for the Palestine High Commissionership. Sir Matthew stated that no offer of this appointment had been made to him and he saw no advantage in now discussing whether he would have accepted it if it had been.

Sir Matthew, a member of one of the most prominent Jewish families in Great Britain, held important administrative positions under the British government when Sir Herbert Samuel was Postmaster General.

“People of the Jewish race or of the Jewish religion or of both, who have resided in countries such as those that make up the British Empire, where they enjoy complete equality with their fellow citizens, will certainly not desire to change their present nationality or permanently to leave the countries that they love,” Sir Matthew declared. “I am satisfied, however, that the Jewish National Home, being made possible in Palestine through the administration of that country under mandate from the League of Nations, should be a tremendous boon to those who go there from the East European countries where they have suffered oppression. The immigration of such Jews to Palestine and their settlement on the land in that country is a splendid scheme deserving of every support from their brethren who have lived under happier conditions. I agree that a national language will contribute greatly to the creation of a national home and that the language of their literature and of their prayers is the natural one for a people to adopt for this purpose,” he stated.

Asked as to the status of the Jewish community in Australia, Sir Matthew stated that the Jews in Australia, as a part of the British Empire, the commonwealth of nations, enjoy a similar status to that of the Jews in Great Britain. “Some of our co-religionists hold high positions in the various states and are held in high esteem by the people.”

Asked whether there is a possibility for Jewish immigration to Australia, Sir Matthew stated that the general policy of the Australian government is to facilitate the admission of producers, mainly agricultural workers. “I have lived in agricultural Queensland for five years and I have great admiration for the primary producer. His is a hard but attractive life,” he said.
