Megotiations for the acquisition by the Palestine Government of the whole railway line stretching from Kantara, at the Suez Canal, to Haifa in northern Palestine are in progress now between the British military authorities and the Egyptian Government on the one hand, and the Palestine Civil Administration and the British military authorities on the other.
A total of 480,000 pounds will be required for the acquisition of the line, which is divided into two parts. The former, belonging to the Egyptian government, extends from Kantara to Rafa along the Mediterranean coast. The latter stretches from Rafa to Haifa. The entire line was built by the British army during the “push” beginning 1915 and which ended in 1918 with the virtual annihiliation by General Allenby’s Army of the Turkish forces. It is understood that the Egyptian government will surrender its part of the line to the British army for 240,000 pounds and that the military administration will sell to the Palestine Government the northern part of the line for a similar amount.
