Palestinian Authority police clashed with gunmen in a key West Bank city.
Security forces deployed by P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas in Nablus over the weekend dispersed a group of Al-Aksa Brigades gunmen Monday, sparking gun battles. Two policemen and three gunmen were wounded.
The Palestinian Authority said Tuesday that two gunmen were arrested and vowed to rid Nablus of unlicensed weapons.
The Nablus police deployment is a test of Abbas’ willingness to impose security in West Bank areas under his control ahead of the Annapolis peace conference with Israel.
