The Republican State Committee of Pennsylvania advised the Philadelphia Jewish Community Relations Council, which had protested against the formation of a “State Republican Jewish Campaign Committee,” that it “does not have nor will it tolerate religious campaign committees.”
The reported formation of such a committee-because its title included a religious designation–was immediately denounced by the Jewish Community Relations Council as a violation of its “Statement of Principles to Govern the Conduct of Political Campaigns.” The “Statement of Principles” was originally formulated in 1944 by a non-partisan committee. “The whole matter was an unfortunate error and we deeply regret its happening,” said Kenneth F. Kressler, director of campaign headquarters for the Republican State Committee.
