A nation-wide religious festival, touching the life of virtually every church-goer in the country, will be held on June 6,7 and 8, celebrated without regard to creed, color or race, the United Service Organizations announced today. The occasion will be called USO Sabbath.
The observance will emphasize the basically religious character of member agencies of USO. It also will stress the interfaith aspect of the organization. Participation by soldiers, sailors and workers will be featured. Sermons on morale and kindred subjects are being planned by ministers, priests and rabbis. In many churches special sections will be set aside for men in uniform. In some cases they will march to worship in units.
The opening observance will be held in Orthodox synagogues Friday evening, June 6, and continue through Saturday. On Sunday, Protestant, Catholic and some Jewish groups will continue the celebration.
A rabbinical committee of eight is serving with Rabbi Edward L. Israel on the Clergy Advisory Board. They are Rabbi Samuel Goldenson, Dr. Louis Finkelstein and Rabbi Leo Jung, New York; Rabbis Louis L. Mann and Solomon Goldman, Chicago; Rabbi Henry Berkovitz, Portland, Ore.; Rabbi Jacob Kohn, Los Angeles, and Rabbi H. Raphael Gold, Dallas, Tex.
