An appeal for unity, patience and support of Jewish communal institutions in connection with the proposed law on Jews was issued today jointly by Dr. Simon Havesi, president of the Rabbinical Union, and Hofrat Samuel Stern, president of the Union of Hungarian Jews.
Declaring that representations on the bill had been made in Parliament, the appeal emphasizes that the Jewish population is “second to none” in patriotism and is prepared to work and to make sacrifices for Hungary. “We were, we are and we shall continue to be Hungarians of the Jewish religion, who at all times have served the Fatherland well by their work,” the appeal said.
The appeal called upon Hungarian Jews to unite and to continue to perform faithfully their duties to country, society and religion, adding: “Everyone must contribute to the best of his ability to safeguard the continuity of civil life and civil work.” Appealing to Jews to remain faithful to the old religion, the appeal branded as cowards those “deserters from Judaism” in the present difficult times who “not only dishonor themselves and their families but are bound to experience bitter disappointment.”
