Polish Jews are now in a precarious position in Spain as a result of the severance of diplomatic relations this week between Spain and Poland, it was reported here today. The fear that they will be marooned in Spain as “enemy aliens” till the end of the war is expressed in the report.
The Polish Jews, all of them refugees from France and Belgium, have been herded into Spanish camps and were held under terrible conditions even before Spain decided to break off relations with Poland. Polish Consular officials in Madrid were, however, making constant efforts to secure permission for these refugees to proceed to Lisbon where they would have been aided in emigrating to overseas countries. With the closing down of the Polish consulates in Spain, the interned Jewish refugees remain unprotected and completely isolated from the outside world.
