Congressional sponsors of a bill to establish a Near East survey commission issued an announcement this week-end, emphasizing that “future political considerations” must not be allowed to enter into consideration of the idea to investigate opportunities for economic development.
Five additional Senators have pledged support to the plan. They are Senators J. Howard McGrath of Rhode Island, Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, Irving M. Ives of New York, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., of Massachusetts, and Francis J. Myers of Pennsylvania. The sponsors emphasize that the resolution implies no commitment to any Near East state but is “fact-finding and exploratory” in intent. “This is no Marshall Plan, but rather an effort to forward the development of agriculture and industry in this important region based on developing its resources with United States technical aid and investment.”
