A proposal that the Jewish religion be, in effect, considered by the Catholic Church as the antecedent of Catholicism was made here yesterday at the first discussion meeting of Ecumenical Council Vatican II. The viewpoint came to light in the official summary of the session, issued by the Vatican today. However, the name of the ecclesiastic personality who had made the proposal was not mentioned.
The Father who voiced the proposal told the Council: “Since the Church has existed since the creation of the world, the Church of the Old Testament was not only a preparation but, in itself, a true Church and perfect society.” He added that it would be desirable to invite representatives of non-Christian religions as observers to the Ecumenical Council.
