An appeal to the Jews of America to “give their full support to the Jewish Council for the Russian War Relief” was made here today by Prof. Albert Einstein in a message to more than 2,000 representatives of fraternal and benevolent Jewish organizations attending a testimonial dinner given in honor of Prof. Einstein by the Jewish Council which is collecting funds for Russian war relief activities.
Emphasizing that only his health prevented him from attending the dinner, Prof. Einstein declared in his message that “as friends of human progress, as Americans, and not least as Jews, we have the very strongest reasons for giving our utmost to the struggle of the Russian people for freedom.”
Reviewing the role played by Russia in the present struggle for the freedom of all nations, Prof. Einstein praised the Soviets’ cultural and scientific achievements and said that “if Russia were defeated by the German hordes, we in America and in England would be in a very bad way.” He emphasized that Jews must remember that “in Russia there is not only a formal but an actual equality of nationalities and cultural groups of every sort.”
