Quiet prevailed in the city yesterday following the coup d’etat of ex-president Smetona against the Liberal government which was in power.
The Fascist dictator of the city, Col. Glovacki, issued a proclamation in which he declares that “the former Sejm and government have sold the country to the Bolsheviks and the aliens.”
The Sejm was dissolved by the insurgent forces. A general strike was declared in the city by labor organizations. The leader of the Fascist revolution, Col. Plekhavicius, a former officer of the Russian Imperial army, is known to be a strong opponent of the national minorities.
All the members of the former Liberal government, including the ex-president of the Republic, were arrested. A temporary military government, with Smertano as president, was formed.
