The executive committee of the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island has endorsed the idea of divestiture from any corporation doing business in South Africa which fails to adhere to anti-apartheid standards.
The Federation decried what it considered the oppression of millions of Blacks, and said “the Jewish community cannot be indifferent to the plight of any group anywhere in the world that is denied its basic rights.”
The executive committee said the Federation was reviewing its own investments with the goal of implementing the divestment action. The Federation said it would continue to monitor the situation in South Africa, “assessing the effect of this concept of divestment and taking appropriate action where necessary.”
