Rabbi Arthur Schneier, of Manhattan’s Park East Synagogue, was elected Tuesday chairman of the American Section of the World Jewish Congress at a meeting of the section’s plenary council. The 48-year-old Vienna-born rabbi is also founder and president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation. WJC president Philip Klutznick praised Schneier for his achievements in international relations and interfaith goodwill, particularly in Eastern Europe. Rabbi Schneier, who represents the Religious Zionists of America in the WJC section, was named vice chairman of the North American Branch last month by its chairman Edgar M. Bronfman.
