A statement appealing to the governments of the nations of the world to reject a proposal now before the United Nations for a world calendar reform which would unfix the Sabbath, was issued here after a meeting of the Chief Rabbis of ten countries and a representative of a national rabbinical group from the United States.
The statement noted that the rabbis were not opposed to calendar reform as such, but against this particular proposal which would require a “blank day” at the end of the year and would result in the Sabbath falling on a different day of the week in every year. Present at the meeting were: the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Holland, Eire, Italy, Luxemburg and Sweden, and a representative of the Rabbinical Council of America.
