A religious revival among young people is taking place in both the American and Israeli armed forces, Colonel Solomon Goren, Chief Rabbi of the Israel Armed Forces, stated at a press conference here, following a meeting at the Pentagon with U.S. Army officers. Colonel Goren is now in the United States in behalf of the drive to sell $75,000,000 in Israel bonds during 1957 for Israel’s economic development.
“The religious revival in Israel has made itself felt with particular force during the past year, since the Sinai campaign,” Colonel Goren said. “I was told at the Pentagon yesterday that the same type of religious rewakening is being observed in the American Army. We believe that this intensified awareness of the impact of religion is being experienced by young people throughout the world.”
Colonel Goren was the guest at the Pentagon of Major General Patrick J. Ryan, Chief Chaplain of the U.S. Army. Others with whom he conferred there included Colonel Charles Brown, Colonel Penton, Colonel William Pitzgrell, and Colonel Sauls. The first kosher luncheon ever held at the Pentagon was served to Colonel Goren. He is an experienced paratrooper who has worked closely with paratroop groups in the Israel Army, and has served in the front lines with troops in combat. He met also with leaders of the paratroop forces of the U.S. Army.
