Most of the 10, 000 Jews repatriated from Russia to Poland are in “miserable condition,” Charles Jordan, European director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee, said here today at a press conference.
He said the JDC had undertaken the task of looking after thousands of the repatriates, particularly in providing medical care and education which they have lacked for a long time.
He said the aid would depart from usual JDC patterns to work through local committees for social help together with the Central Cultural Committee of Polish Jewry.
An additional 20, 000 repatriates were expected from Russia very soon, he reported, adding that while the Polish Government extended help to the returnees, such help was inadequate and additional aid would have to be provided.
