Press reports from Tunis today said a berserk Tunisian soldier shot and killed at least one Jew and wounded several others when he opened fire on Jews in or near a synagogue in Jerba during holiday services.
The reports said the crazed man was shot to death by fellow soldiers. The small Jewish community in Jerba, about 500 kilometers south of the capital, Tunis, is the remnant of an ancient community of Jewish cave dwellers that existed centuries ago.
The killings came a week after Israel Air Force jets destroyed Palestine Liberation Organization headquarters at Hamma, a former beach resort about 20 kilometers south of Tunis, and only two days after a berserk Egyptian, either a soldier or policeman, killed four Israeli children and three adult tourists on a Sinai beach.
