A heated debate is expected this week at the plenary session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) over a resolution demanding that Israel quit the administered territories. The resolution by Peru has been accepted by a Third World group at the Conference. The 22-item agenda also includes a debate on the continued closure of the Suez Canal.
In another development here, Carlos Vicuna, president of the Chilean Committee for Soviet Jews, appealed to the Soviet Ambassador to intercede for visas for Esther Markish, widow of the Jewish poet Peretz Markish, and her son David, who want to go to Israel. Peretz Markish was a victim of the Stalin purge of Jewish intellectuals in 1952. Vicuna’s telegram to the Russian envoy noted that Mrs. Markish and her son have made repeated applications for exit visas without success.
