The National Peasant Party whose leader, Juliu Maniu, is now the head of the Roumanian Government finds itself in a sharp clash with the Union of Roumanian Jews, headed by Dr. William Filderman, a Liberal.
Negotiations for an election bloc between the two bodies having failed, the Union of Roumanian Jews presented its own candidates for election and issued a manifesto to the Jewish population urging support in the forthcoming vote. The headquarters of the National Peasant Party issued a statement today in reply to the Union.
The Peasant Party lays emphasis on what it terms the main issue in the forthcoming campaign. The issue is democracy as opposed to the conceptions of the Liberal party. In the government as well as in parliament the Peasant party represents the forces which stand for the march of democracy, which must by its very nature be dear to the Jewish population, the statement declares. The National Peasant Party has among its membership a large number of Jews and there is every reason for the trust that, when victorious in the election, the Party will fulfill the justified demands of the Roumanian Jews. Besides, the list of the National Peasant Party contains the names of prominent Jews who are candidates for election, it argues.
