The Swedish press today reported that Rumanian Premier Antonescue has reached an agreement with the Nazi authorities to send 60,000 Rumanian Jews to Nazi-held Poland to construct fortifications. About 20,000 Jews will be sent from Bucharest and 40,000 will be taken from other cities in Old Rumania, the report stated.
The report also revealed that 160 Jews have been arrested in Bucharest as supporters of Dr. Julius Maniu, former Rumanian Premier and head of the Peasant Party who is opposed to the Nazis.
Transocean, a Nazi news agency, today reported from Bucharest that the Supreme Court of Rumania has ruled that the anti-Jewish legislation there is to be applied to every Jew in the country irrespective of his nationality. The ruling was issued in the case of a Polish Jew who appealed against being evicted from his home in Bucharest arguing that he was not a Rumanian citizen and therefore not subject to the Rumanian anti-Jewish laws, especially since he is under the protection of Chile as a Polish citizen. In rejecting his appeal, the Supreme Court stated that the anti-Jewish laws are enforceable on a racial basis and can thus be applied to any Jew regardless of his nationality.
A report from Sofia today stated that a former Jewish member of the Rumanian Foreign Ministry, Rosenthal, has been arrested by the Gestapo in France. Despite intervention by Premier Antonescu with the Nazi authorities, the arrested official was deported to Poland, the report added.
