Silas Aaron Hardoon, well-known Jewish philanthropist of China, holds the distinction of having attained the highest honor to be conferred upon a foreigner. In recognition of his many activities in China, the Chinese Government has decorated him with the First Class Order of Chaoho.
Mr. Hardoon left for Peking last month at the invitation of the Chinese Government and was accorded an armed guard. While in Peking, he was received by the President of China and had lunch with him. He was also the guest at Tiffin of the Boy Emperor and Empress in the Forbidden City.
Prior to his departure from Peking, Mr. Hardoon was invited by the British Minister, Sir Ron ald Macleay to the Legation and to dine with him. This was Mr. Hardoon’s first visit to Peking, after his sojourn in China covering a period of fifty years.
Mr. Hardoon has received several decorations from the Chinese Government for his philanthropic work in China. He is advisor to the Tuchun of Kiangau, to the government of Anwei and others. He is probably the best and most widely known foreigner in China amongst the Chinese.
