Sander Levin, former state Senator and former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Committee, won overwhelmingly in the primary contest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. During the primary campaign Levin was subjected to anti-Semitic remarks. Joseph Levin, son of the late federal judge Theodore Levin and Sander Levin’s cousin, was defeated in his bid for a congressional seat. Many other Jewish candidates seeking judgeships and state government posts were winners in the primary held Aug. 6.
