Schroeder, sentenced to death for the murder of the bookkeeper Helling, was granted clemency. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
Schroeder caused a sensation by his accusation of the Jewish merchant of Magdeburg, Rudolph Haas, whom he charged with having murdered Helling, who was Haas’s bookkeeper.
Haas was cleared of the charged in a trial which became the center of controversy between the reactionary and liberal elements in Germany, the case having been termed the “German Dreyfus case.”
