Funeral services were held here today for Prof. Issey Schur, exiled German Jewish mathematician, who died last week at the age of 66. Prof. M. Fekete, dean of the Hebrew University’s science faculty, declared in a eulogy that “had Prof. Schur lived to complete his book, he would have revolutionized mathematics.”
Dr. Schur, for 19 years Professor of Mathematics at the University of Berlin, resigned in 1935. He is believed to have been the last Jews to hold a post in a German university. Previously he had served for three years at the University of Bonn. Prof. Schur was known for his work in theoretical mathematics, particularly in algebra and modern functional theories.
