The appointment of an elections committee, composed 51 members, to supervise the elections to the executive committee of the Histadruth which will determine the strength of the various competing groups within the central labor organization in Palestine, was announced here today.
The elections are to take place on August 6. The elections committee consists 26 members of the Mapai, the Palestine Labor Party, of which David Ben-Gurion is one the principal leaders, ten members of the opposition group within the Mapai, ten members of the Socialist group Hashomer Hatzair, three members of the Left Poale-zion and two members of the General Zionist Laborites.
Meanwhile, the long-threatened split in the ranks of organized labor in Palestine was believed to be unavoidable following the results of elections to the executive committee of the Carpenters Union, which were considered a test vote for the august elections of the Histadruth. In today’s elections, the group in the Mapai led Ben-Gurion received five seats. The “B” group within the Mapai, which is opposed Ben-Gurion’s policy, received three seats. The Hashomer Hatzair received one seat, and the Left Poale-Zion obtained two seats. Thus the opposition groups, as a bloc, secured one more seat than the Ben-Gurion group.
