Twenty members of the Senate, eighty members of the House of Representatives, and 125 mayors of large cities today presented a joint petition to President Truman urging the government to take “the necessary steps that Palestine in its historic boundaries shall be proclaimed as a Jewish State.”
The petition, submitted through the New Zionist Organization of America, also urged that the Jewish people “through a delegation of Palestine Jewry” be invited to participate in the councils of the United Nations.
Stating that “unless the Jewish problem is solved, it will constitute a permanent obstacle to the effectiveness of any post-war settlement and to the peace of the world,” the declaration voices sharp criticism of the failure of the leaders of the United Nations to invite a Jewish delegation to San Francisco, declaring that this was “a gross injustice and an error.”
The declaration describes the treatment of the international obligations made to the Jewish people as a “travesty of international law,” and states, “It is imperative that when we set out to mend the fences of international morality and to lay new and stronger foundations for justice and peace, we make certain that the grave wrong done to the Jewish people be righted; that Palestine shall be restored to them and their nationhood recognized.”
