Several Jewish leaders threw their support behind a new centrist political party in Russia. Russian Chief Rabbi Adolph Shayevich and Jewish legislator Yosef Kobzon were among those who attended the first meeting of the Fatherland Party, founded by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. Luzhkov is a likely candidate in Russia’s next presidential election, scheduled for 2000. He recently spoke out strongly against anti-Semitism and ultranationalism in Russia.
