Ninety-five persons between 18 and 25 left here today to begin a year-long service tour in Israel as part of Sherut La’am, a program sponsored by the American Zionist Youth Foundation which enables young Americans and Canadians to participate in the development of Israel and become acquainted with its social problems.
The participants will study Hebrew at the Ulpan Upper Nazareth, after which they will be sent to various parts of Israel to serve in such capacities as English teachers, tutors, aides to social workers, and arts and crafts instructors. The group members, most of whom are college graduates, have already been taught some Hebrew, Israeli songs and dances.
This was the third group to leave for Israel during 1969, A group of 28 left in January and another 26 left a few weeks ago for a six-month stay in Kibbutz Yiftach. Another 60 will leave for a year-long kibbutz program in September. The volunteers in 1969 bring to more than 1,100 the number of participants in the program since its inception in 1965. Volunteers trained in teaching, nursing, social work and technical work are placed in immigrant development towns, villages and other areas. The program provides a kibbutz placement for teachers and their families, as well as a moshav program.
