A U.S. interagency group known as the Sinai Support Mission has been authorized by President Ford to set up and maintain the early warning system between Israel and Egyptian forces in Sinai, the State Department announced today.
The director of the agency who is to be named soon will report to President Ford through his Assistant for National Security Affairs, the announcement said, Most of the work will be done under private contractors but the director will provide policy guidance, supervision and monitoring with the help of an Inter-agency board made up of officials from the State and Defense Departments, the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the Agency for International Development and the CIA.
Selection of up to 200 civilian technicians to man the installations will be done by contractors based on open competition among companies with necessary qualifications for the jobs. They are expected to be on duty in Sinai by Feb. 22. A team assigned to survey the sites for the station left for Sinai Dec. 2.
