Special services were held to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sir John Monash at St. Kilda Synagogue where the Australian hero of the first World War was an active member. The services were part of a nationwide observances honoring Monash, who was the first commander of Australian forces in France.
In a tribute to Sir John at the gathering attended by Jewish members of parliament and representatives of the Government and the Army, Rabbi Ronald Lubovsky lauded Monash’s achievements as a lawyer, engineer and soldier. He said that although Sir John had not attended synagogue services regularly, he had declared while at the height of his fame that he was first of all, a Jew.
