Disavowal of the anti-Semitic policy and racial appeal of D.F. Malan’s “purified” Nationalists was made by ex-Premier J.B.M. Hertzog, defining his position at a special caucus of the 39 members of the United Party who followed him in the party split over the war question. General Hertzog indicated that he would be the leader of the official Opposition in Parliament.
