South African Jewry is agitated over the immigration quota bill introduced into the South African parliament by Dr. Daniel Malan, minister of the interior. By the terms of the bill no more than 50 immigrants would be admitted each year from any country not in the British Commonwealth or included among twelve so-called Nordic countries of Europe and the United States
Mass meetings are being held throughout South Africa protesting Col. Josiah Wedgwood, now visiting here, has urged the Jews to fight the bill. From Bethal, a large Jewish farming community, has come a wire to the premier appealing to him to disapprove this racial measure against the Jews and implied aspersions on their loyalty and good citizenship. A similar appeal has been sent to Minister of Justice Pirow, who voluntarily praised the immigrants during the recent elections. The “Capetown Times’ is unsympathetic to the bill while the “Argus” is non-committal.
