A statement from the present Spanish government as to whether it considers the decree of 1493, expelling Jews from Spain, as having been abolished, is the requisite for the Bulgarian Jewish League of Nations Society’s participation in the forthcoming Congress of League of Nations Societies to be held in Madrid in May.
Dr. Saul Mezan, in a communication addressed to the International League of Nations Union, declared that since the advent of the constitutional era in Spain, Jewish political circles have repeatedly endeavored to secure the Spanish government’s abrogation of the edict of 1493 by which all Jews who would not accept Christianity were expelled from the country. The present government, under Dictator Prima de Rivera, having abolished the Constitution, it is doubtful whether Spain offers sufficient guarantee enabling the convening there of an international interprofessional assembly such as the Union, Dr. Mezan declared.
The present Spanish government should be asked to make a precise statement as to whether it considers the expulsion decree abolished, such a declaration being the minimum guarantee for the participation of the Jewish League of Nations Society. Otherwise, Dr. Mazan added, he doubts whether his Association would be able to participate.
