A call for urgent relief for Jewish refugees from France arrested in Spain when crossing the frontier in an attempt to escape deportation to Nazi-held territories was received here today by the Joint Distribution Committee from Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, its European representative in Lisbon.
“Spanish prisons are filling up with refugees from unoccupied France,” Dr. Schwartz cabled. “We are being called upon to supply food and to also make every intervention for their liberation. Yesterday, alone, twenty-five newly arrived refugees in Barcelona were sent to the Spanish concentration camp in Miranda, while their wives remained in prison in Barcelona. The budget for our work in Spain must be augmented.” The JDC’s budget for work in Spain which has already totalled $190,500 thus far in 1942, is being increased to $22,500 monthly. A special grant for the purchase of winter clothing for the internees in the Miranda Camp has also been made.
