Fearing that the convention of anti-Semitic groups called for today in St. Louis by Gerald K. Smith would result in “serious trouble,” the chief of police issued a last-minute order prohibiting holding the convention as well as a protest meeting against the convention scheduled for tonight.
The convention was scheduled to be held at the municipal auditorium. Today a full-page advertisement appeared in the local press calling upon the city administration to revoke permission for use of the auditorium. Veterans’, labor, women’s and other groups joined with the St. Louis Jewish Community Council in protesting the use of a public hall for un-American propaganda.
