State Department sources said today there is no basis to press reports that the United States is studying possible creation of a Western defense base in Israel.
It was further made known that the Department has no information which would tend to confirm that the British are discussing a possible return to Haifa, as mentioned in the reports. The use of Israel as an alternative base after British evacuation of Suez has not even been suggested to the State Department, it was said.
